Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Pros: "Pretty much all my needs/wants were seen to! Likewise, on the trans-ocean flight leg."
Cons: "Some fashion model wishing me happy flying? I really don't know. :)"
Pros: "They charged me so much for extra luggage even I prepaid online for extra luggage prior to getting to airport. Yet the ticket counter lady made me pay an additional fee and all together I ended paying more for extra bags fee than the ticket itself! both Virgin and JetStar are VERY stingy on extra luggage fees. I came from the US to Australia and traveled domestically while there with all the luggage that I brought from the US. So I had to pay so much in fees when my trip was already so expensive! It makes me reconsider wanting to travel again anywhere anytime soon, so discouraging! Also they make me take stuff out of my big suitcase and transfer to my carry on, in front of everyone at the ticket counter I had to open my suitcase and transfer some stuff so the weight is under a certain weight. Still they charged me for extra luggage. I came international on Qantas from USA to Australia, so all the domestic locations I went to I was charged"

Cons: "The computers continue to be problematic. It took 25 minutes at the checkin desk to get the system to take my document numbers. Also the in flight movie system has issues with touch sensing, often being slow to respond and misreading the location of the touch."

Cons: "Crew was rude and discriminatory with Passports, for 18 hours stay layover I had to sit in chairs,. Not hotel or Lounge provided. Which is against international laws."
Pros: "Efficient and comfortable"
Cons: "15 hour flight and the crew walked up and down the isle every 3-4 minutes shining a flashlight in your face and over all the seats. I asked if this would continue all night and they said yes as it’s how they check on drunk passengers etc and that it was part of the aircraft safety. Was very intrusive and impossible to sleep."
Pros: "Good boarding and friendly staff"
Cons: "Seat and legroom"
Pros: "Staff were friendly. Trip was pretty standard."
Cons: "Due to turbulence, as soon as we landed in Melbourne, the plane had to shut down on the tarmac which then meant I missed my connecting flight and had to wait in the airport for 6 hours until the next flight. All we were offered was a $24 gift voucher! That would get you a coffee and maybe a sandwich if you are lucky!"
Cons: "I could not check in, my e-ticket was deemed voided. Called BYOJet, could not fix. Got full refund because 100% not my fault."

Cons: "Flight attendant who clutched my hand with the latex gloves she was using to protect herself from germs and then with attitude and rude tone demanded to know if I had a problem."
Pros: "It wasn’t outstanding but no major problems Whereas the boarding process for the flight from Melbourne to LAX was poor 3 and half hour delay on tarmac no air flow Only to have a person disembark as well further delay ( dont blame her) The staff were ok but their hollow reassurances about support that would be given on the ground in LAX because of the delays were just that Told virgin staff would be on hand to assist TOTALLY UNTRUE yes they we’re there but didNOTHING to assist with ongoing flight delays"
Cons: "See above"

Cons: "I did not like their entertainment package i.e. movie selection and particularly the TV shows. The ABC NEWS was a joke."

Pros: "Guy at check in counter helped us with our visa into Australia and was friendly and helpful"
Cons: "Flight crew was standoffish and bathrooms were not fully supplied"
Pros: "staffs were nice and smiling. plenty of snacks for everyone to eat like larabar, lays chips, coke and pepsi, etc"
Pros: "We paid for Premium Seating- not quite Business Class, but supposedly like Business on a domestic flight. Boarding was great, right after business. We had problems with my seating, but the crew did everything they could to amend the issues. The crew was wonderful and really took great care of us."
Cons: "Right away we found out my chair was broken, and couldn't recline. Also, we had been placed in the first row of Premium and there are no automatic footrests. The crew has to bring those out. But there weren't any on board the plane at all. And since I'm only 5'2" tall, my feet don't reach the floor, causing blood circulation to be cut off in my legs from the pressure of hanging on the seat. No recline for 12+ hours, and no foot rest = a lot of pain and discomfort. I've been to the doctor twice since arriving home and am still in pain."
Pros: "His a combotable airline"
Cons: "Landeing it Wendy"
Pros: "Food was terrible!"
Pros: "Efficient loading and unloading, very friendly team"

Cons: "The line to bag check was ridiculous and to the door in Sydney."
Pros: "The flight was very good."
Cons: "What I didn't like was having my flight changed from the original 7 pm to 5 hours earlier! It messed up our arrangements and meetings with others."
Pros: "Free wine"
Cons: "The plane was delayed. Why. Not quite sure."
Cons: "Difficulty in correcting name on ticket"
Pros: "Staff were lovely"
Cons: "Morning snacks were frozen and soggy"
Pros: "on-board entertainment"
Cons: "Virgin bumped my family (myself, wife, 11yo son) from flight due to a downsize in aircraft. Only notification was email at 11pm previous evening, which we didn't see. We arrived at airport to find out we were ticketed on flight leaving 10:55PM rather than 11:35AM, and new flight routed through Sydney rather than non-stop. Virgin offered no compensation for getting us to Melbourne a day late on a worse flight. Would not pay for hotel for a stay overnight in Perth to take alternative flight in morning."
Cons: "Flight to go on time"
Pros: "The flight was during very bad weather and the pilots did a great job of keeping us informed and feeling safe."
Cons: "Due to the weather snacks were handed out but no water. Water used to be provided in single serves. As it is now poured into cups it was not provided on the flight. This seems like cost saving that is unacceptable to customers paying the same price with no access to a drink on the flight."
Pros: "The service was good even for such a short flight (20 mins)"
Cons: "Was an old aircraft so the interior could do with updating"
Pros: "The sense of really flying!"
Cons: "Some of the turbulence."
Pros: "Friendly staff and crew. Great landing!"
Cons: "Leg room a little tight."
Pros: "25 minute flight, no need for in flight entertainment."
Cons: "Could use some more leg room."
Cons: "Limited baggage allowance , check in clerk over officious and totally unhelpful. "Safety" factor re weight used interminably, why not upgrade fleet if safety is so important ? Asked how I was to get luggage not on flight , told " not my problem , read fine print ""
Cons: "Rang 6 hours in advance to say miss a fight from Brisbane to Adelaide due to flooding in mount isa bus delayed for 3 hours and was only let know 20 minutes after bus was suppose to leave charleville . Would have been nice to get a credit."
Pros: "Beautiful polite and professional ladies air hostesses"
Pros: "Not much"
Cons: "Remote stand boarding"
Cons: "I had to claim my bag between Jetstar flights and then go through security again to my second leg....I flew from Hobart to Auckland today. So at Melbourne I spent several hours in the process Of going to claim my bag, going through security again and rechecking it. Horror...terrible experience. I will never fly Jetstar again....they do not transfer bags between the flights on their own airlines which I booked under the same ticket."
Cons: "May be offered water to everyone."
Cons: "late flights. Poor communication."
Pros: "Not much. 1hr 5min flight was 1 hr 10 min late. The cabin crew seemed disinterested."
Cons: "The crew was poor. One chewing gum, another picking her hair/head throughout the flight like she has nits. The third lolling around and chatting/gossiping to the others. This is a short flight. The least they could have done was behave professionally."
Cons: "Ridiculous delays to our flight with no explanation. They initially advised us of a 6 hour delay then on arrival at the airport the board says there is a further 2 hours delay. So I’m stuck at the airport between 2:30am till 6:00am with a useless meal voucher from them because nothing is open. :("
Cons: "I informed I wouldn’t be taking the return flight and asked for a refund/voucher or anything.they said no refund; nothing.even had to pay more to put baggage on the flight out.Flight Got canceled 10pm night before, the best they could offer me was a flight two days later. Suddenly full refund availa"
Pros: "The crew is beautifull"
Cons: "The time schedule"
Pros: "Efficient on time"
Cons: "One young cabin crew member was very polite and welcoming - ? Angela The other older woman would not even acknowledge me or say hello / goodbye despite me saying hello"
Cons: "very confusing and stupid luggage policy. I paid extra for weight but did not appear to need to so as no one's bags were weighed (maybe because we left out of the international terminal?). Get rid of the weight requirements and just do a bag size and number limit. (We can all count, but few folks have a scale to accurately weigh their luggage - especially tourists)."
Pros: "that I was able to fill up my water botttle"
Cons: "I found the crew to be a little rude"
Pros: "Before departure and On board staff is good."
Cons: "it is more like a Cage Chicken situation, where the seats and spaces are shrinking every day. No room to move and keens from people behind you is pinching your arse all the time. Should have pay bit more in Virgin or Qantas and get some space to breath. Kayak does not offer extra luggage at time of you booking and jetstar sucks you like a leach on upgrading after booking. One of the passengers were not able to travel and ticket was complete lost , where as the inbound flight on Qantas gave us credit for the future. In the end , the total cost ends up close to other airlines with all the discomfort on the flight free."
Pros: "Personal tvs on each seat."
Cons: "My extendable handle was broken during the flight/luggage handling and my side handles on my luggage were also ripped off. This made it impossible for me to go from Point A to Point B with no way of moving my suitcase."
Pros: "Thus question does not apply to Jetstsr."
Cons: "Very old outdated aircrafts, very poor customer service, always fishing for money through baggage limit excesses, baggage limit is ridiculously low, aircraft garbage often found in sesat povkets from previous flights ... overall a very low class of airlines."
Pros: "Jetstar offers cheap flights and if you check in early enough, you can often get your preferred seat. Great option for small people (height wise!) who want to travel light."
Cons: "There’s always a risk involved when booking with jetstar. I’ve gotten lucky so far with no cancellations and some very kind flight attendants, but you really never know. There is no standard of service. You need to know that EVERYTHING costs extra so traveling light is of the utmost importance."
Pros: "On time"
Cons: "No water"
Cons: "We were on the tarmak an additional 30 minutes, then in the air for an additional hour due to the weather. It would have been really nice if they had offered us bottled water or something. I was very surprised that even to get water it was a $4 charge. I likely will not be flying Jetstar again. I appreciate a company not nickle and diming with customers."
Cons: "Seats are crumpy every small item must be paid separately, crew is clueless, If I can avoid it I will never fly Jetstar again"
Cons: "Seats are very worn out, and quite uncomfortable at the lower back part."
Pros: "Jack at the customer service desk dealt with my problem in the perfect professional manner. He didn't stop until he found a solution for me. I was very impressed with this airline"
Pros: "The took me from Singapore to Melbourne and that's the only thing I am happy with"
Cons: "Very rude and not friendly staff My carry-on weighted 9.5 kilos and they forced me to check in my carry on. The cost was 160 SGD which is insane. They said it's airline's policy and my response was that it's a stupid policy The entertainment service sucks. You have to pay for everything No food /snack provided during the flight. Oh sorry they were willing to sell you a small snack for 20$. I found that this airline just tries to gauge people. Pro ide minimal information during ticket purchase and the surprise you at the gate and during the flight. Not happy at all...Never will fly with jetstar again."
Pros: "The desk agent told me it would cost 75.00 for one piece of luggage. she was kind enough to try on the internet and I only paid 23.00."
Cons: "They charged twenty three dollars for luggage."
Pros: "We got everything we paid for"
Cons: "Some of the cabin crew including the manager need to lighten up and smile occasionally"
Pros: "Free TV"
Cons: "Staff.... hot dogs for breakfast"
Pros: "Smooth transition for daughter who needed assistance to board"
Cons: "Having to sit apart especially when there were vacant seats"
Pros: "Not many positives here. The crew was nice?"
Cons: "Long line to check in, old dirty plane. Charge for everything. Cheap fares not worth service. They overcharged $125 AUD baggage fee for a 20kg bag which is within limits. Since I booked the flight with Kayak, I had trouble paying in advance for bags online and selecting seats via kayak and on Jetstar website after booking in USA. It is not clear on any site that there is a 15kg bag limit and and excess charge beyond that. I even tried adding a bag and seats 24kg prior while in Australia but it wouldn't let me or give me that option. I was told at the Jetstar service desk that I need to contact Kayak/ Jetstar directly via email to file a complaint for this ridiculous bag charge. Its unfortunate that as USA person we are not aware of this poor service airline. My bag was not over limit and there is no justification for this high bag charge. USA airlines only charge high if you are overlimit but Jetstar is ripping people off. if there is anything you can do for me, its greatly appreciated."
Cons: "We were outraged to arrive at the check-in and be told that our 2 bags would cost $320 to check. We were not notified of Jetstar's sneaky, deceptive, and unprecedented practice of increasing baggage fees over time."
Cons: "They canceled my flight last minute, for no reason, and didn't reimburse me the cost of the last minute flight I was then forced to book on another airline. I will never book with Jetstar again."
Cons: "My husband had a heart attack (two weeks before the flight) and was not allowed to fly until he was cleared by his cardiologist. We had to cancel our planned trip. I was hoping to get some money refunded from this ticket for compassionate reasons. Unlike some other airlines, this did not happen."
Pros: "My partner and I are very tall, so the flight attendant moved us to an exit row free of charge. It might have been a glitch in the system, but we got to use the entertainment system for free and it had a good selection."
Cons: "Weight limitations for carry on bags. You have to pay for EVERYTHING-- blanket, cup of coffee, food/snacks, even on a 12-hour flight."
Pros: "The flight was at a convenient time."
Cons: "I didn't like that when I submitted my request to fly from Melbourne that Jetstar flew from 2 airports. I found this confusing and caused a problem since I'm unfamiliar with the area."
Cons: "When we booked flight on kayak we were not made aware that we had to buy baggage allowance. When we got to airport and went to check luggage they charged us $900 USD for four normal sized bags, one bag each. Called customer service, waited 25 minutes and then rude agent refused to listen to my concern about this or connect me to anyone that could actually help us. Agents at desk first told me there was no supervisor there I could talk to and then I asked one lady there and she said she was supervisor. I asked if she had another number she could call since I was on hold so long and she flat out lied and said even they have to call that same number I had to get help. She then just walked away and completely ignored me. Not a single person for Jetstar seemed to think $225 per bag was unreasonable or showed any hint of compassion or desire to try and help us. They didn't seem to think it was odd that my bag that weighs 1/4 of what I do cost more to fly then I did. Never fly with them, go with any other carrier. Don't give these greedy and predatory punks a single cent."
Cons: "Been charged $320 extra for two checked in bags for an INTERCONTINENTAL flight! No free meal / water on a 5.5h flight! Entertainment system 'on-demand' - not a single free item on it, movies, games, series, $5+ per item!"
Pros: "I like the fact that when you book a flight you then have to pay for a seat .... What do you expect us to stand ! then you have to pay for baggage and all the other hidden costs .... after you have payed !"
Cons: "Dont have a credit card and they say we will be only taking credit card for beverages . On the flight over they said the reason was because we came from Bali and had no change but why the flight from Adelaide so again couldn't buy anything... Great service !"
Pros: "Flight to the Ayers Rock was without a problem."
Cons: "On our flight back the staff a the airport was questioning our small foldable NEW MSR stove WITHOUT any gas canister and marked our bag as with a dangerous item. We personally confirmed with the security officer that the stove was unused and WITHOUT any fuel. Despite that fact, he bag was left behind and not with us on the flight. We are not sure when it will be delivered and it is disrupting our trip itinerary. We travel all over the world and had never such a problem with a stove. The security action was, to our opinion, extensive."
Pros: "Entertainment was free."
Cons: "There was no prepaid food choices. Prepaid food portions were smaller and more expensive than choices on board to buy. Prepaid hot dog was disgusting."
Cons: "There were lots of hidden fees which made this flight more expensive than a full service airline"
Pros: "Seat was springy and broken, purser was rude and crew were not friendly or happy to work. Charging for tea, coffee and giving free tap water from a Crystal Geyser bottle refilled was a joke. Way to nickel and dime and jeopardize our health with bacteria filled water that is not in a sealed bottle."
Cons: "Movies was limited and ok for $10. That was the only thing semi good about this 11 hour ordeal."
Pros: "Crew were fantastic... efficient, welcoming, professional."
Cons: "We were SHOCKED to learn that we could not purchase additional baggage weight allowance online (were not allowed to check in online), and when we got to the counter to check in, were told that each additional kilogram of baggage weight over 20kilos (per person) would cost us $25!!! This is outrageous. We are traveling in Australia/NZ for 23 days with golf clubs and many bags, spending lots of money in these countries, and were very upset to learn of this archaic policy."
Cons: "We booked through Kayak and weren't told that when you book a flight with Jetstar, you get NO BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE. ZERO, ZIP, NIL. We didn't know this and assumed like other Australian and New Zealand carriers, we would each get one free bag, so I went online and paid $25 for a third bag. When we checked in for a domestic flight, we were told that we would have to pay $400 to send our luggage with us. THAT WAS MORE THAN WE PAID FOR OUR SEATS! We were also told that had we paid for our luggage ahead of time, it would have only been $60. Be very careful if you fly this airline. Make sure you know what is and what is not included with your ticket, especially if you use a third party to purchase your tickets. PS - All drinks (including coffee, tea, soda, etc.)are extra. Frankly, I'm surprised they don't charge for using the toilet in flight"
Cons: "When I booked from USA thru kayak I was told I would have 1 checked bag & 1 carry on . At airport I was charged $682 for luggage cause " I didn't say I was flying with luggage "supposedly opting out of the $ 35.00 fee for luggage. Only other option was to re-book for next day loosing out of bookings in Cairns which was not an option. Many other passengers on our flight faced same predatory practices by Jetstar. Gate agent said website changed to be more transparent. This is not true Luggage fees more than doubled cost of flight. This is only direct flight from Adelaide and you're trapped .""
Cons: "Well we got there after finding it confusing to get to the airport, got there in time to board, went to put in my information got to the part where I entered to 20 KG baggage and entered it wrong, put down both having luggage, tried to go back on the screen, it didn't work, asked for helped the lady was busy and asked me to hold, as we did, when she came back after 5 minutes, she returned to main screen, which she didn't need to but by the time she went through the whole process again flight had closed arghhhhh $100 extra for next flight, disappointed as you would be.... first holiday,Many tears and disappointed because we were there in time but hey bad luck I was told but being an error, disappointed, by no one cares Judy"
Cons: "I thought my ears were deceiving me when they mentioned 3 AUD for lavatory use! Inhumane! And that's on top of having to pay for my check-in luggage. I felt completely dooped! Traveling through the outback, I had no scale, no wifi, etc. And after paying an exorbitant amount, we were STILL given hassles for our carry-on.. Apparently if you "wear" your luggage on your body, it's free of charge (but on aggregate, it still adds to weight & balance of the plane). And how this all contributes to fast handling is beyond me. Moronic rules! Of all the great times I had in Australia, JetStar was the only utter disappointment I had to endure! Never again!"
Pros: "Some of the staff were very friendly and considerate and we were compensated with free entertainment after a long delay."
Cons: "There was no communication among staff member and zero communication with customers who were transferring. We were left in absolute confusion, had no idea about our connecting flights and had to depend on the staff of other airlines to find out about our flights."
Cons: "Spent 260 dollars on extra baggage fees, and you had to buy everything on board as an extra charge coffee, juice, anything. Total rip off"
Pros: "Left on schedule and flight was smooth."
Cons: "could not believe that Jetstar charges $160 per bag for luggage: $800 for five bags. I have never seen more than $50 charged elsewhere. Adds a huge extra cost to a short flight and discourages"
Pros: "The fact that Jetstar used a Dreamliner for long haul flight who has very experienced pilots"
Cons: "That Jetstar makes you pay for everything from luggage (most if not all low cost airlines in other countries give you a standard check-in baggage allowance) to selecting seats and watching entertainment! I understand the concept of profit and loss but c'mon guys, this is a bit excessive!"
Cons: "over charging for carry on"
Pros: "I liked the convenience of the airport and getting on the flight."
Cons: "I didn't like that there are a lot of hidden fees with Jetstar. I didn't realize you needed to purchase bags for the flight and was unpleasantly surprised when we got to the airport and were told it was going to be $160 to get our bags on our flight and that if we would be paid for it a day before it would have been substantially cheaper. Also, nothing was provided for free on the flight-not even water or the entertainment for a 6 hour long flight."
Cons: "Very uncomfortable. In addition, At time of boarding, I was carrying a very light carry on. 9lbs. Only airline I've heard charging $50AUS, if it's over 7lb. Unheard of. (For safety reasons). Bull. Many other passengers had plenty of larger and heavier baggage of which I pointed out. Matthew (at the gate) mentioned it didn't matter, because I was the one being selected, (in other words, I was the one that looked most like a tourist). I had a very light LV carry on duffle bag. People were carrying rolling luggage.... While the payment didn't bother me, what bothered me was the fact of having to put my luggage understand. Seats in plane were ridiculously uncomfortable. Unlike anything else."
