Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Cons: "No organization in check in process. Staff unfriendly and unhelpful. No control over situation."
Pros: "Happy to be on last leg. Good crew one of whom told some guests to shut up while she delivered the safety information. I thought that was great that she had the guts and did the right thing. Give her a bonus as we are all taking the delivery for granted."

Pros: "Good smooth flight and fine service."
Pros: "Easy access from both front and back of plane."
Cons: "Stewardess got frustrated with my son ( almost yelling at him) instructing him to open the shade after the flight ended speaking Chinese to him. Though my son is half Asian, he doesn't speak a word of Chinese, she should have started with English !!! It was a flight from Australia for god sake."
Cons: "Nice people but the seats are close so very tight fit for anyone over 5"5'"

Cons: "Advertised as full service airline but food was lacking, general cleaning between flights not great."

Cons: "I had garbage that I tried to get rid of and the attendant told me to hold on to. I had to board the plane from outside and go up steps with my carry on."
Pros: "The plane was spacious, the food was good, the service was beyond expected. One of the best overseas aircraft I have been on. Seats were comfortable and spacious. I liked the movie choices & that you offered headsets, masks, ear buds and blankets."
Pros: "My bag arrived with me and was first on the belt."
Cons: "Shuttle bus at SYD delayed by construction. No entertainment system on flight."
Cons: "We were delayed transferring because of the Virgin bus being infrequent getting passengers between the international and domestic terminal and almost missed our flights. There was confusion trying to get our bags checked in as they were fast tracking people whose flights were after ours but not us. Then it was awkward being late and last on our connecting flight with everyone glarring at us."
Pros: "Wonderful staff, always smiling even though they were exhausted!"
Cons: "Too many kids. The child seated by me kept kicking me and climbing on me during the whole 13.5 hour flight. His parent did nothing. I had a 20 hour layover in Sydney arranged after the flight was booked due to changes."
Pros: "Plane is new, well kept"
Cons: "7kg limit for carryons is complete bollocks Going down a flight of stairs, across the tarmac, and up a flight of stairs to get on and off the plane reminds me of Propeller days, not 737s. Inflight entertainment: no displays. BYO smart phone and make sure the VA app is pre installed Cup of Soda is $3. Tried to add a 5th piece of luggage, but because it was booked through Kayak, I had to pay $70 a bag. (Blocked from adding bags) Overall: don't book using Kayak. Use VA site. And do homework before you pack."
Pros: "Helpful staff"
Cons: "Kids spilling drinks on me, no entertainment, no wifi"
Pros: "Not much to like, price was good, that's the only plus"
Cons: "Food is terrible, no entertainment, no blankets or pillows, simply best described as "basic"."
Pros: "Spacious seats with a LOT of leg room. Very friendly crew"
Pros: "Virgin does a great job for a great price. Having Resided in the USA for 12 years I've flow many times across the pacific on each of the airlines and I can confidently says they are lightyears better than any of the American Airlines. On my return trip from Sydney I had hit some extraordinary traffic and it took 2hrs to get to the airport in what is usually a 40min drive. This resulted in me arriving less than 1hour from the flights departure time, the checkin staff did what they could to keep me on the flight as planned. Staff in all areas were great, it always a fresh breath of air when I board a virgin Australia flight, so different than traveling in the US of A...."
Cons: "The Food on Virgin Australia is ok. From the United States to Sydney it was average, on the return leg the quality was much better. They served 2 meals and a mid-flight snack. Their snacks and water station Mid plane is a very welcome touch on the long haul flights. Perhaps one more pass with the full drinks cart will help them join the heavyweights at Qantas."
Pros: "Mostly everything"
Cons: "The seats were a bit cramped."
Pros: "Free wine"
Cons: "The plane was delayed. Why. Not quite sure."
Cons: "Water was the only complimentary drink. And no peanuts or pretzels were included."
Pros: "Plenty of food. Seats a good size , my husband is 6ft 5in and the economy seats were more comfortable than other airlines. The crew werer pleasant and helpful."
Cons: "The movie selection wasn't particularly great."
Pros: "Good food, quick flight, we had a fair amount of space"
Cons: "The hostess forgot to give us drinks and didn't even remember after everyone had been served"
Pros: "overall excellent service"
Cons: "Check-in process was terrible; all automated and designed to suck additional funds from your wallet. "Food" was toy-sized, and every beverage except tea, water and coffee costs extra. I'm going back to Qantas."
Pros: "Quick, easy check in. Friendly, efficient, helpful staff. TSA very efficient and quick. Flight was on time. Luggage pick up was fast."
Pros: "Whole row to myself"
Cons: "Turbulence and I slept through to beverage/snack service"
Cons: "Breakfast was sub-par (bad frittata, beans and fatty bacon rasher). Fewer movie selections on inflight entertainment compared to previous USA-Australia trips."
Pros: "Hostess smile everytime"
Cons: "Virgin Australia staff were extremely unhelpful when I called from Sydney (20+hrs before landing in LAX) to find alternative flight to JFK due to snow. Their inability to rectify the situation on the spot resulted in all outbound flights to LA being full by the time I landed in LAX and a subsequent 3-day stay in LA… hence missing my wedding anniversary. Thankfully my husband purchased the first available ticket at US$1,000 and was able to get me back to NYC in time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I am extremely disappointed that Virgin Australia did not amend the flight when I first called - staff in LA further reinforced that Syd ground staff should have been more helpful. On top of all of this I had to pay US$120 for excess baggage due to 20kg restrictions - what international flight only allows 20kg. All in all this has been an extremely disappointing experience and I will not be flying virgin for any further international trips."
Pros: "On time and smooth"
Cons: "nothing specific"
Pros: "cheese and tomato SW"
Cons: "too many yuppies"
Cons: "No complimentary food, no entertainment, rude flight attendant"
Pros: "The flight crew was very attentive even w/ a full cabin. The flight itself was uneventful. On board entertainment made the 13+ hour flight less miserable. For economy class I felt like the amount of leg was generous."
Cons: "I food was not spectacular but it was adequate. My expectations for economy class are never high so I don't really feel this is a negative it was as expected."
Pros: "Like Virgin Australia's inflight entertainment app which works on board."
Cons: "Long lines for baggage drop in Sydney Domestic airport. That airport needs some improvement."
Pros: "It was a very welcoming experience from the flight crew"
Pros: "...we still arrived only 20 minutes late. The cabin crew was friendly and very efficient. I hardly waited at all for my bags."
Pros: "The crew was very friendly and competent. The seats are fine but there is very little room to store anything within reach."
Cons: "Changed my flight at last minute and put me on a much later flight."
Pros: "Bumpy but I guess VA can't do much about that. Everything else was perfect. Thank you"
Cons: "I have a disability and they damaged my electric scooter which I use to get around. They expressed no concern at all and told me they took no responsibility for damage to anything they carried."
Pros: "Hassle free no worrying about re arranging your bags or anything, they were friendly and everything was a breeze."
Pros: "We traveled business class. So everything except the IPad entertainment was first rate."
Cons: "Absolutely awful customer service and accommodations"
Pros: "The crew was friendly and helpful."
Cons: "Loud and noisy flight. With it being a red-eye I thought they should make an effort to quiet the plane down."
Pros: "I appreciated that the plane was on time at both ends the attendants were on cue throughout the flight."
Pros: "Early morning flight meant no delays. Walked straight on the flight and we were off. No fuss..."
Cons: "The flight announcements were loud and abrasive which woke everyone sleeping on the early morning flight. No doubt is was that particular cabin manager and not the norm."
Pros: "Good crew, very friendly. Went above and beyond to find a passenger at baggage claim who left something on board."
Cons: "Boarding was very delayed."
Pros: "Arrived ahead of schedule"
Cons: "These short domestic flights are just a bus ride in the sky. Provided the simple service that was all that we needed."
Pros: "Seat was comfortable."
Pros: "Crew was great. No problem at all."
Cons: "Bag did not make the flight and customer service at the airport was amazingly indifferent."
Pros: "Price..on time and a smooth flight."
Cons: "Be sure to pay for checking baggage when you purchase your ticket. I didn't because I thought we could carry our two small roller bags on board. We were not allowed to and had to pay $120!"
Cons: "Ok so. With ticket purchase you only get a carry on bag in economy. To pay for a checked 15kg bag is $68, but only if you pay ahead of time. If you pay at the counter it will cost you $100. The woman at our gate was completely alone, and clearly frustrated by the situation and kept radio-ing for information about where the rest of her crew was. They are flying 787 Dreamliner now and just squeezing as many people as they can on them. I am a 5’10” female and my knees were hitting the seat in front of me. Want to recline your seat? Go ahead, but the bottom of the seat now slides forward as well to compensate for the lack of space. So if you’re tall like myself, you can’t recline your seat because it forces your knees further into the seat in front of you. Lastly, they have this ‘amazing entertainment service’. It’s $8 to watch a movie or play a game of solitaire. Such a scam. Water is the only drink included and the power outlet in my seat didn’t work. They are exactly what they have always been, but dressed up nicer, cheap and crappy airline looking to make as much money as possible. Won’t be flying with them again. For the money I paid to check a bag plus ticket cost, I could have flown a much nicer airline. will do next time!"
Cons: "very rude service from ground crew while disembarking the plane in hobart....find that lady another job or fire her"
Pros: "New airplane"
Cons: "You have to pay for everything. Water wasn't offered during the flight but passengers have to ask for it."
Cons: "My flight was changed and I was not notified. I had to purchase another flight, which turned out to be quite expensive. I would like to be put in touch with someone that has the ability to provide me with a refund. Will you please send me the direct phone and/or email of said person. Thank you, Dean Cortez email@example.com 619-246-4647"
Pros: "Very pleasant staff on board and land crew. Difficult to judge food as it was only a snack and as the flight was only just over the hour there was no entertainment ."
Pros: "Flight was easy and quick two hours"
Cons: "Everything went perfect"
Pros: "It was a short flight."
Cons: "Check in at airport quite chaotic, thank goodness for the assistants. However, that's when we found out the need to pay for baggage as carryon is very limited. Quite a hefty fee too. Good thing we brought our own water. Absolutely nothing free on the flight!"
Pros: "Extra leg room with upgrade"
Cons: "Seat too close to tiolet"
Pros: "Fix the food menu!!!"
Cons: "Fix the food menu!!!"
Cons: "Kiwi didn't offer the option of paying for checked bags and they charged $100 more than it'd normally cost. Great job!"
Pros: "The crew was relatively nice."
Cons: "A lot of crying babies. No food or entertainment included for the 9.5 hour flight."
Cons: "Seats unusually small. Unlikely to fly this airline again"
Cons: "The flight from HCMC to SYdney was 3h delayed (supposed to leave at 10:35 and left just before 2 am. We are required to pay for entertainment and basic drink and snacks."
Pros: "The basmati rice with free range chicken meal was surprisingly really tasty. I usually don't like airplane food, especially when you have to pay extra on board for it, but I was hungry on a 9 hour flight and had to order something."
Cons: "From the moment of boarding the staff seemed stressed out and over it. Not very friendly, especially when disembarking the plane in Honolulu. They didn't offer goodbyes or thank yous to passengers as we got off the plane."
Pros: "Food was nice although expensive. Crew was great. the auto tinting Windows was nice."
Cons: "We were so dehydrated after such a long flight. The little cups with only a few sips with your meal is not enough. More water! Comedy options for movies were just bad. Our seats would not stay reclined. Painful sitting/sleeping on such a long flight. Jetstar is supposed to be a budget airline but they really aren't cheaper after they nickel and dime you and then bring out the long sword on the cost of luggage. The 7kg allowance per person on board with no option to purchase more was really hard for us - 2 adults and a baby - and the diaper bag is counted as part of your 7kg, unlike flying in the US. We had 7-8 hr layovers in cool weather."
Cons: "Jetstar is the worst airline around. Its absolutely ridiculous that they charge you 10X more for checked luggage at airport check-in. When I booked my flight 5 months in advance, I didn't see the option of buying luggage (and also didn't think it mattered at the time because normal airlines like Delta, United, etc. charge the same rate no matter when you decide). Thank goodness I knew to buy luggage before getting to the airport but was still charge $60 AUD (when it would have only been $35 if I did it when I originally booked). And it would have been over $150 if I waited for the airport. WHO THE F CARES WHEN I DECIDE TO CHECK A BAG??? YOU STILL HAVE TO GO TO THE COUNTER NO MATTER WHAT. Jetstar is such a low class airline. Then they wanted to weigh my carry-on which was 9kilo (2k over the limit)... full of all camera gear. The guy literally started yelling at me, made me feel so uncomfortable, and my eyes began to water. He was screaming to another woman in front of everyone that I was WAY over the weight limit and was to be charged $210. He was extremely aggressive. (This was a moment I wish I would have whipped out my phone and took a video... would have gone viral). The woman wasn't any better either. At first she was really aggressive and I hadn't said a word. I just watched them react as if I brought a weapon. She raised her voice at me yelling about the stupid luggage being too heavy.... and at that point I told her that she needed to lower her voice and talk to me like a human (let alone a customer). At that point she did realize that she was being ridiculous and lowered her voice (I might even give her the benefit of the doubt and say the guy may have rattled her). I explained to her that I was carrying expensive camera gear and batteries (which you cannot put in checked luggage) and that I'd be happy to put it in the checked bag (especially since I had extra kilos that I hadn't used). She said I would need to sign a waiver exempting them from being responsible if anything was stolen from my bag. I politely said absolutely not. If you cannot get my luggage to my destination safely then I would happily not get on the plane and walk over to the Air New Zealand desk and buy a ticket. At that point she looked me up and saw how much I flew with them and then decided to let me on the plane. Which mind you, the plane was 75% EMPTY. After all that. Geez. Never again Jetstar. Never again."
Pros: "Few crew members who went out of their way to ease our frustration"
Cons: "Surprise expenses Most people who buy directly through the Jetstar website add baggage allowance. You don't get this option when buying on Kayak. Poor connection and wait time The long layover was annoying, and proved costly, too. You need to buy a Visa in Australia if your layover is longer than 8 hours. Kayak doesn't warn you about this, and so you have to collect your baggage, go through customs, and buy a Visa. In sum, Kayak shouldn't allow you to purchasing strings-attached tickets from this airline."
Pros: "Didn't crash"
Cons: "Misleading baggage policy cost additional $150 for a single bag at check in. Agent unwilling to find a different fare / baggage rate. On board they charge everything. Seats uncomfortable, felt passenger behind knees into my back. Overall terrible, cheap airline."
Cons: "They lost our luggage and it took many, many calls to finally get it over 24 hours later"
Cons: "There are no complimentary snacks. Also, we had to pay for the movies. I wish the entertainment was free like on all other airlines."
Cons: "Charged $285 for 1 checked bag! Wow. SCAM"
Pros: "The plane was relatively new."
Cons: "Boarding was late. Food selection was poor Entertainment choices were slim And obviously charging for luggage and food sucks."
Pros: "I am still in denpasar"
Pros: "787 is great. But reserve exit row"
Cons: "pay for water"
Cons: "Gate agent assumed we didn't speak English so she re-assigned us from an exit row to the back if the plane. Agent didn't ask us if we spoke Eng (we are native Eng speakers). When we realized what she was doing, she was surprised that we spoke Eng but continued to re-assign us. Extremely poor service. Will not fly Jetstar again."
Pros: "Jetstar provided a NZD25 voucher to all passengers for the disrupted flight."
Pros: "The check-in woman was a gem! Due to Australia's strict carry-on policy - one item, period - I had to repack my luggage, which contained a fragie printer that had been in my carry-on when I could have it AND a computer bag. The Jet Star allowed two checked pieces, and the agent gave me all the time I needed to make the changes. She then marked the bag fragile, and sent me to the oversize/fragile bay with it. It arrived in PNG rattled, but working normally. The woman was a peach!"
Pros: "Crew were nice, flight itself went off without a hiccup and was fairly fuss-free"
Cons: "Our flight was delayed by approximately 1 hour, and there were few announcements about this until fairly late, and the departure billboards were slow to update too. Also, no armrest on my seat's right arm which was a little less comfortsble that it could have been (window seat, emergency exit row)"
Pros: "The plane was nice and spacious, crew was friendly and captains were apologetic for all of the inconviences."
Cons: "The aircon was out the entire flight due to maintenance related issues that weren't fixed. We left an hour late and arrived an hour late also based on these issues."
Cons: "Lack of communication So cheap and stingy they give Scrooge A run for his money."
Pros: "We were on our way from syd to bali and just before we reached ocean we turned around and headed back toward Melbourne. As upset as we were about that situation they were extremely accommodating. They said the Landon strip in Bali had broke so we couldn't land. They Bieber, gave us free coffee, tea and juices and gave us all free onboard entertainment. When we got to Melbourne they had set up free shuttle server and out us all up in a very very nice suite and gave us a voucher for breakfast which was more than enough! Then on our way back to bali they again gave us all free onboard entertainment. Very nice! Loved it!"
Cons: "Didn't like that they took so long to tell us about the problems on the landing strip. I thought we were being hijacked!"
Pros: "I liked the convenience of the airport and getting on the flight."
Cons: "I didn't like that there are a lot of hidden fees with Jetstar. I didn't realize you needed to purchase bags for the flight and was unpleasantly surprised when we got to the airport and were told it was going to be $160 to get our bags on our flight and that if we would be paid for it a day before it would have been substantially cheaper. Also, nothing was provided for free on the flight-not even water or the entertainment for a 6 hour long flight."
Pros: "Cheap fare"
Cons: "Restricted carry on weight limit"
Pros: "Horrible airline. Can't understand the reservation people. Misleading on what you are paying for. Worst airline I've ever seen. Fly Virgin, which is much better."
Cons: "All the customer phone people speak in heavy accents you can't understand. Airline makes false statements on its website. Awful company."
Cons: "No entertainment or food at all even for long flight, all is sold individually. Even for really old movies you are charged, tv or anything at all!"
Pros: "The service was good, the staff were friendly"
Cons: "I was told I'd have a window seat for the flight and I had an aisle seat."
Pros: "Economical and value for money"
Cons: "We couldn't check in until an hour before boarding and weren't allowed to take the 2 carry-on bags each as advertised. Had to repack quickly to get the things that had to be hand carried (CPAP's, cameras, medicines, etc.) into the backpacks and then got charged $28/bag for the 2 bags that should have been carry-on. Unimpressed."
Pros: "Did not crash."
Cons: "$50 hidden baggage fee!"
Pros: "The crew was efficient"
Cons: "I wasn't aware JetStar operated on a "budget" airline level worse than that of a second world country airline. Were there alcohol, movies, terrible food, bottled water, and pillows available? Yes. Did JetStar take every opportunity to charge customers for any and all services? Yes. Perhaps I should have rearranged my expectations, knowing that this was a "budget" line, but their fees for additional services were worse than AirAsia."
Pros: "It landed safely"
Cons: "It was late. The seat spacing is so tight I can't sit with my knees together. Painful after a while."
Cons: "Boarding - It showed "one hour delayed" and then once the initial boarding time comes, it says "now boarding". Crew - We sat in the back seats and the crews talked about their co-workers. One of the dudes sounded feminine and it was annoying. Drama about other people. drama drama."
