If you’re staying in western Melbourne or in suburbs such as Werribee, Point Cook, or Geelong, you are best to fly into Avalon Airport (AVV), located about 1h south-west of downtown Melbourne. Tullamarine Airport (MEL) is about the same distance from downtown Melbourne in the north suburbs. As the Tullamarine Airport is larger, you will find a larger selection of flights here.
Those flying into Avalon Airport (AVV) can take a Skybus express to either Melbourne city or Geelong for about A$ 20 per adult, one way. It takes about 1h to reach the city by bus. Tullamarine Airport (MEL) also has a Skybus express to Melbourne which is the most direct way to get to the city. Alternatively, there are also buses run by Public Transport Victoria (PTV) that can take you across the city.
You can find short-term and long-term luggage storage at Tullamarine Airport (MEL) baggage claim in Terminal 2 from the SmarteCarte kiosk. The kiosk is open from 05:00–00:30. Rates start at A$ 9 and you can receive a 10% discount if you’re storing luggage for more than seven consecutive days. Alternatively, there are also luggage lockers available at the Terminal 4 Car Park.
Those flying into the Tullamarine Airport (MEL) late at night can find the 4-star PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport directly opposite the terminal. The Holiday Inn is also nearby, behind the terminal parking building. Finally, you can find the Ibis Budget also onsite as you exit the airport, not far from the petrol station. All offer shuttles to and from the terminal.
If you need a prescription filled, some over-the-counter medications, or basic toiletries, you can pick up supplies at the Amcal chemist in Terminal 1 or 2 Check-in Area of Tullamarine Airport (MEL). If you’re looking for something to eat, you can find various concessions throughout the airport. Some, such as the Subway in the Terminal 1 and 2 walkway or Villa & Hut in Terminal 2’s Arrival Area, are open 24h.

Pros: "Arrived ahead of schedule"
Pros: "Nice crew inside the plane"
Cons: "It is outrageous the price for overweight cabin that was not even 10kg. Not food or entertainment included in ticket price. Even if it's a short flight, at least water to keep passengers hydrated should provide. Really uncomfortable with this situation."
Pros: "The touch down landing was PERFECTLY smooth!! Thank you Captain!"
Cons: "Small walkway and seats."
Pros: "Seat was comfortable."
Pros: "Most importantly on time and friendly staff."
Cons: "For a discount airline everything was as expected. As said above, being in time and friendly employees made it an excellent flight."
Pros: "it was fast and effective"
Cons: "Easy to book and check in"
Pros: "Small flight"
Cons: "Nothing to say because small aircraft"
Pros: "one crew member appeared to authentically greet and farewell clients with a twinkle in his eyes."

Pros: "It’s okay"
Pros: "I luved the attendants and the service"
Cons: "THE AIRPORT IS NOT IN MELBOURNE! We had to hire an Uber for 100 dollars to drive us the hour to Melbourne. It should be clearer when booking this airport is significantly farther away. It would have been more convenient and economical to fly into melbournes international airport."
Cons: "And no announcements re the delay until the very last minute."
Pros: "Attention to details"
Cons: "Lack of snacks"
Pros: "the actual flight was fine"
Cons: "When I looked up the flight option through your site I selected one checked bag per person and it showed the price and I decided to purchase. Then when I tried to check in at Jetstar online it showed I had no checked bags WHY?! then I complained about it in an online chat and the chat agent would not agree and said I had to pay for checked bags if I had any and said he/she could do that and asked how much the bags weighed. Since I did not know and could not answer how much the weighed I decided to check them online myself since it gave me options for weight/price I knew our bags would be under - the chat ended and I proceeded to try to pay for one bag each online. However, after more than a half dozen attempts which were all rejected I had to close the online check in and leave as we were running short on time to get things done and get to the airport. At the airport I told all this to the agent at bag check and she would do noting but charged me about $240 for the two bags - grossly more than the $28 for one and $38 for the other that I was trying to pay online & roughly as much as the cost of the flights! Will you please let me know what can be done to get my money back as this is just not right?"
Cons: "Flight change fee within 24h of booking would have been $120 for a $49 flight. Carry-on was 9kg instead of 7kg - $60 extra fee. Never again."
Pros: "Avalon is quiet, decent facilities"
Cons: "Should give water on the flight. Didn’t buy food didn’t use entertainment"
Cons: "It was good flight"
Cons: "Rude ground staff."
Cons: "Didn't realize when I booked I'd be charged $60 for a lightweight duffel, one way. Will not repeat."
Pros: "And different from other international carriers ( 20 kg instead of 23 kg). I had to pay 105 AUS for a carry-on from Sydney to Melbourne. It would have been less expensive for the carry-on to buy a seat."
Cons: "The entire experience"
Cons: "Eat and sleep"
Pros: "The fact that we tried to check our bags 10 minutes too early but the bag check desk used the ten minutes to train new staff and allowed us to shave $25 off a potential bag weight fee."
Cons: "Need to repeat several times if you change a gate number for our flight."
Cons: "With an aisle seat, bumped several times by crew everyone they walked up and down the aircraft"
Pros: "Efficiency, timeliness, friendly crew"
Cons: "1. Center of seat was so thin I could feel some part of the structure pushing against my spine to the point of discomfort. 2. Temperature was quite cold for both flights (row 19 & 21). Not sure if it was my location or something else, but I fly a fair amount and the temp was below what was comfortable for me."
Pros: "Debbie at Avalon was very kind and helpful!"
Cons: "Upon boarding a flight from Sydney to Avalon I was told my duffel bag was too large to carry on the plane even though I had been allowed to fly a few days prior with the same bag. I even placed my bag in the sizer at the gate but she still told me it was too large and "too heavy" although she did not weigh nor pick up my bag. About 5 minutes prior I had seen her walk a guitar that had been gate checked down to the plane. My bag was not so lucky. I arrived at Avalon and my bag didn't. My bag was going to arrive on the next plane which wasn't coming in for 3 hours. We were staying about an hour from the airport and boarding an early morning flight from Tullamarine to Los Angeles. Deliveries of missed luggage ceased 2 hours before my bag was due at the airport and didn't commence until after I was due at Tullamarine the next morning. The flight attendant who made me check my bag was on my flight and easily could have told me my bag wouldn't be making it on our flight but she didn't. She was rude, smug, and unaccomodating. The customer service representative at Avalon, Debbie, was more than helpful trying to figure out the best option for me to retrieve my luggage before my flight home to Los Angeles. She made a stressful situation a little less so. Thank you Debbie!"
Pros: "We packed very light for a ten-day trip to Australia (two small carry one, a messenger bag and a tote). Nevertheless, we ended up spending $50 each to check bags. So much for a bargain flight."
Cons: "It is one awful airline. First they fly from Avalon airport which is too far from Melbourne. Then they have a scheme to overcharge you for luggage. We went with two carry on, small suitcases and they charged us 100 Austrlian dollars. Nothing is offered on the plane. Service is bad all around. AWFUL"
Pros: "I am still in denpasar"
Pros: "Aircraft and crew"
Cons: "Over one hour at check in."
Pros: "Jetstar, only because we had a wheelchair request was our experience okay"
Cons: "we felt like just a number otherwise"
Pros: "Inexpensive, relatively speaking."
Cons: "The fact that they did not mention ahead of time that if I check bag at airport there was going to be a 50 dollar charge but if I had checked the night before on line only a 25 dollar charge. That does not seem fair expecially since they don't seen you email or anything telling you this in advance. The ticket agent at the airport told me."
Cons: "2h delay"
Cons: "There's no entertainment however the flight is only one hour"
Pros: "The check-in woman was a gem! Due to Australia's strict carry-on policy - one item, period - I had to repack my luggage, which contained a fragie printer that had been in my carry-on when I could have it AND a computer bag. The Jet Star allowed two checked pieces, and the agent gave me all the time I needed to make the changes. She then marked the bag fragile, and sent me to the oversize/fragile bay with it. It arrived in PNG rattled, but working normally. The woman was a peach!"
Pros: "Everyone was very polite, to compensate for ripping us off on the cost of our luggage... By the kilo!"
Cons: "No info when we purchased the ticket on Kayak that this airline does not charge by the bag, but by the kilo. No chance to buy kilos when we bought the ticket. Got ripped off at the airport. This airline is is for backpackers, NOT for the international traveler"
Pros: "The crew was amazing."
Pros: "All was good from boarding to exiting"
Pros: "We were on our way from syd to bali and just before we reached ocean we turned around and headed back toward Melbourne. As upset as we were about that situation they were extremely accommodating. They said the Landon strip in Bali had broke so we couldn't land. They Bieber, gave us free coffee, tea and juices and gave us all free onboard entertainment. When we got to Melbourne they had set up free shuttle server and out us all up in a very very nice suite and gave us a voucher for breakfast which was more than enough! Then on our way back to bali they again gave us all free onboard entertainment. Very nice! Loved it!"
Cons: "Didn't like that they took so long to tell us about the problems on the landing strip. I thought we were being hijacked!"
Pros: "Deplane at both front and rear of plane."
Cons: "Gate was chaotic, trying to load a bus to the plane."
Cons: "departing late (again)"
Pros: "plenty of room nice staff"
Pros: "The leg room associated with have a seat in an emergency exit"
Cons: "They changed our gate 3 times. They changed the flight time over 5 times."
Pros: "Economical and value for money"
Pros: "It was good. Nothing extra. It was efficient. We arrived safely on time."
