FAQs for booking flights from the United States to Queensland

  • I want to travel from New York to Cairns. Which airports should I choose?

There are no nonstop flihgts from New York to Cairns, so you must account for at least two layovers. If you would prefer flights to Queensland using only one airline, don’t forget to remove the filter for multiple airlines on the KAYAK website. If you want the least number of layovers possible, then select the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as your travel’s starting point. Australian airline Qantas Airways operates nonstop flights from JFK to Sydney, from which point you can take a connecting flight, also on Qantas, to Cairns.

  • I’m booking a flight to Queensland to visit Fraser Island. Which airports do I choose?

The airport closest to Fraser Island is the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY). However, this airport is only served by domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and additionally flights from Auckland, New Zealand. If you’re traveling from the East Coast in the United States, Qantas Airways flies nonstop from JFK to Sydney, and from there, you can take a connecting flight to Sunshine Coast. From the US West Coast, Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways both fly from LAX to Brisbane, but you’ll need to account for one more layover in Melbourne or Sydney before reaching your final destination.

  • I’m visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Which airport is the closest?

The Great Barrier Reef Airport (HTI) on Hamilton Island is the closest, served only by domestic flights. If you want to book a flight to Queensland to an airport with more routes and airlines to choose from, then opt for the Brisbane Airport. QantasLink and Virgin Australia operate domestic flights from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef Airport.

  • Which airport is closest to Port Douglas?

Cairns International Airport is the closest to Port Douglas, about 1h away by shuttle. Please keep in mind that this Queensland airport isn’t served by nonstop flights from the United States, and you’ll have to account for at least one layover.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from the United States to Queensland?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from the United States to Queensland.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from the United States to Queensland?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from the United States to Queensland is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from the United States to Queensland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly from the United States to Queensland with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from the United States to Queensland?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from the United States to Queensland up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of the United States

  • Eight major airports serve Queensland, but only Brisbane Airport (BNE) has nonstop connections to destinations in the United States. Hawaiian Airlines operates nonstop flights to Queensland from Honolulu, and Qantas and Virgin Australia fly to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
  • If you’re looking for flights to Queensland from the United States to visit Cairns, be aware that all flights land at Cairns International Airport (CNS), but you’ll have to account for at least one layover in Brisbane or Sydney.
  • If you’re planning a trip to southern Queensland, look for flights that land at the Gold Coast Airport (OOL). If you don’t mind the number of layovers but would prefer to stick to only one airline, this airport is used as a hub by Virgin Australia.
  • Even though not all major airports in Queensland receive nonstop flights from the United States, most are connected by regular flights operated by Australian low-cost airline Jetstar.
  • United States citizens need a visa to visit Australia. If you’re traveling as a tourist and are staying for fewer than 90 days, you can apply for an Electronic Travel Authority online. Keep in mind that you still need to have a valid passport to travel.

See previous comments. Didn’t take this flight because my other flight was so delayed. Ending up on two other flights as a result and was more than a day late.

6 hour delay and they didnt try to make up any time during an over 10 hour flight

Very good; seat made ready for bed after meal, a plus since one airline covered the seat at the start.

Entertainment was not good. Seems like liquor should’ve been advertised only beer and wine was even though I saw others getting liquor didn’t realize I could. And the food to me could’ve been a little bit.

Food choices perhaps not the best. Only offered beer and wine, when it appeared other liquor was available. Entertainment wasn’t so good.

They charged me over a $1000 dollars to bring two surfboard bags as check baggage. Inappropriate and I would avoid flying sgain

The experience on Fiji Airways was absolutely amazing. Streamlined. All staff was amazing. Pleasant. Friendly. Extremely helpful.

Business class Seats on the A350 from Nan to YVR were wonderful. The flight crew was okay but could do with better training. Toilets were clean but ran out of paper towels towards the end of the flight. The food/menu and the wine offered really needs considerable improvement. Dinner options were either Bolani, a beef sandwich (even this could be made much better), or paneer butter masala. Unfortunately, if you are not a fan of Fijian food, there isn’t much choice. Dessert was either turmeric ice cream or fruits but unfortunately, they were out of fruit! So the only option was turmeric ice cream. I’m not certain how many passengers like turmeric but I am not one of them. They need to cater to a more diverse group of people. Perhaps they need a new chef? The movies& tv shows were mostly older so I didn’t find that interesting either. It was however, fun to view the plane’s exterior cameras as we take off and land. The best thing about this flight are the business class seats.

Comfortable as one can get in Economy, food was very good, staff were super friendly & efficient.

It was all great all around. Will travel with Alaska next trip.

I got the last seat on the plane, in the back in the corner against the window, and I paid a competitive price for my ticket several weeks before the flight.

Everything was good. However, the selections of movies and TV shows were boring and unexciting. It was disappointing.

Long delay before boarding. By the time I was informed of the delay I was already at the gate.

There was no seating at the gate, no where to charge your devices, super crowded. Boarding in group F meant all luggage space was taken when it was time for me to board. The boarding crew was short with everyone and seemed irritated. The luggage space was insufficient, the seat was too small for me (6'4") and very uncomfortable trip. I was in a middle seat between a person snoring the whole trip and a person with very strong body odor. The flight crew was terse and unfriendly, seemed irritated and impatient. Yelled a lot at people with earbuds in, understandable. Finally, we arrived 10 minutes early, only to sit on the tarmac for 20 minutes and wait for a gate. Worst flight experience I've had in years.

I made a mistake. Read what I wrote in the flight from Dulles to SEA. The negative experience was from SEA to BOI. Total garbage. Wont do it again.

Flight 351 SEA to BOI was terrible. We got to cruising altitude and I needed to use the restroom but the fasten seatbelt sign never came off. There was no turbulence and I'd felt the plane level off so I stood up to use the restroom about 15 minutes after we leveled off. The stewardess went over the intercom and said I needed to be seated because the captain hadn't turned off the fasten seatbelt sign....Which... Fair.... But not five minutes later she went and used the bathroom. Felt very unprofessional to leave a paying customer with a burning urethra for the entire flight and bark at them to sit down and still use the bathroom yourself. They never did turn off the seatbelt sign.

For longer trips, snacks are puny, boring and don’t have ANY nutritional value.

One of the worst check-in experiences ever. Apparently, we were overweight and had to completely repack. They tried to charge us an extra $35 per bag on top of the standard checked baggage fee we had already paid in advance. Surprisingly, we managed to fit everything into our carry-ons and stayed under their precious 50-pound limit. (By the way, 23 kg is actually 50.7 lbs, so we couldn’t even go slightly over 50 according to the very unfriendly agent.)

OUr pilot was very good and also a good landing in a very gusting Phoenix. Most important.

Pretty excellent. I don’t know what the pilot could have done better with the bumping ( there was a storm) nor what happened to my ears coming down into bendigo. It doesn’t happen coming down into Sydney just the return flight. I wonder why?

Loved the staff. The economy seats could have been bigger.

Airport and crew experience was excellent. We had to queue for the runway - no one’s fault, but it did mean we were 30 minutes late leaving

Overall good experience with flight and airport wheelchair staff. Also got Indian food in the flights

I liked the service, the menu, and the comfort of the seats! Even tho we were seated by the bathrooms, the reclining seats and movie selection was very good, my husband and I didn’t mind at all

Very good as always, stand out airline. The passengers whom choose to stuff baggage that otherwise should be checked-in is a real bother but that's not the airlines doing. A real frustration that passengers just don't want to check-in luggage. This is a pet hate unfortunately.

It’s a two prop flight so I had problems with my ears on re- entering ! But otherwise fine

I love flying with Qantas. There was no onscreen entertaining on this flight, and only a snack provided (not a meal) but still better than Jetstar or Virgin (in my opinion) so still happy.

The food was terrible. And the flight attendants were very rude. One flight attendant wouldn’t help a passenger lift their carry-on. Another flight attendant wouldn’t give a man an extra blanket. And they walked by not even looking at the passengers to see if they needed a glass of water.

Wheelchair assistance to move through the terminals and to/from the plane door was excellent. No vegan snack on the flight, only something with salami and cheese in it.

Everything is good except the dinner and breakfast. The sandwich is very delicious. Toilet is clean, I only use one of them. Flight attendants are very nice. 👍👍

A bit rush for transit. Food and entertainment are not available

Boarding was a little difficult. The gate area at O'Hare was very small and crowded due to multiple gates in the area. Could not hear the intercom, so had to rely on signage to see when my group was boarding and the signage was blocked by passengers standing in the gate. Flight was great and we arrived in Montreal on time.

Multiple delays and not straight answer from the United team

For economy, it was very good. Staff was great, they even let some of us change seats for more leg room... Put an empty seat between us which was fantastic for a 12hr flight. Onboard entertainment was excellent, I think over 200 choices of movies/tv/etc The bad was the barely/nonfunctional wifi that cost either $16.99 or 1700 miles (full flight). It was atrocious... Definitely the worst of the last 3 long haul major airlines I was on the last few months.

Stewardess spilled orange juice on my clothes/seat no help no apology just threw napkins at me to clean the mess up. Not Happy.

Smooth flight. Boarding was chaotic. Could not hear the gate agent over the intercom. People were lined up in the wrong lines. Groups one and two were told to board through line one and group 3 through line 2. All very confusing. Once in the air, the flight was smooth. There was no entertainment option on this aircraft, even though it was a larger aircraft.

The plane pushed back from the gate on time. However, it stopped on the ramp, and we waited for over 20 minutes before the aircraft pulled back to the gate. Apparently, something of importance had to be removed from the aircraft by the gate agent. I found this to be odd. The delay was not significant, but I felt that whatever was on the aircraft that had to be taken off, should’ve been done before we pushed back from the gate.

I didn’t get on plane. Passport being processed by consulate with visa application. Tried to cancel through underpricer after purchasing cacelling for any reason. No dice, they are thieves.

Electric plugs didn't work. Entertainment system wasn't working

All was good except for the seats, not very comfy.

2.5 hour delay sitting in the plane on the tarmac, you tell me how the experience was

I hope these comments will find their way to AC customer experience team. Me and my spouse 50 years of aged coming back from 7 days perfect vacation... While boarding in FLL flight AC1621, one of the boarding agents (tall aged african american) man literelly yeld at my wife during the picture talking process. MAM ! STEP !! BACK !!! We are not illegal immegrants beying deported, nor are we in the millitary. We are customers returning home. This was unacceptable. While boarding in YYZ flight AC1154, one of the boarding agents (tall aged caucasian) man criticied with several complesant remarks my passport condition saying that I could not travel intl with it due to stain, decoloration, and BLOOD. My passport does not have blood on it! Yes it might be in less than perfect condition, but their are ways to talk to customer that does not imply not allow a boarding agent to be angry fathery like, or a custom agent looking at a suspicious individual. Both experience were less than acceptable for might I remind you a paying CUSTOMER returning home.

Short flight so no food or entertainment. Good landing at SFO and on time. We were told no carryon luggage yet lots of people were puting bags in overhead compartments. The rules need to be made more clear. I was on the first leg of an international flight and this is the first time I could not have carryon luggage.

This flight didn't happen for me because of overbooking.

My flight was overbooked and they would not let me board. I had to book another flight and pay the full amount of that flight. I did not get any help at all from Air Canada or United Airlines.

Comfortable seats and movies entertainment available. Better experience than the flight from Toronto to Denver.

Not enough electronic outlets for charging in the Air Canada waiting to board area but the Most important thing….the plane was booked to only 40% capacity and my row of 2 other seats were empty. My row happened to be one of the few rows that did NOT have raising arm rests. The flight attendant made effort to seat me in a different row. I needed wheelchair assistance due to a cyst on my knee and struggled to move from seat to seat to get to the row. Those 2 empty seats tormented me the entire 15+ hour flight as I had to be upright the entire flight and was not able to elevate my knee. Lots of other passengers were laying down due to the arm rest being able to retract. It is a shame that he couldn’t be gracious and find a row that I could move to.

Poor air traffic controller staffing led to a 50%reduction on flights so we got to wait 4 hrs for our flight! Very disorganized at the gate Poor communication with customers

It was delayed by almost 90 minutes and that messed up our plans but it was beyond UA’s control that is what we heard
