FAQs - booking Nepal flights

  • Do I need a visa to travel to Nepal?

For those that are Australian citizens or passport holders, you can either apply for a tourist visa for Nepal at an embassy before your trip, or at the airport once you have arrived. Most tourist visas will only let you stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days, and their prices vary depending on their duration.

  • I would like to visit Mount Everest during my trip. Which airport should I fly into?

If one of the reasons that you are travelling to Nepal is to see Mount Everest, it is best to fly into Tenzing-Hillary Airport (LUA). There is no public transportation that connects the airport with the mountain’s base camps, so you will have to make the trek on foot if you plan on hiking. Alternatively, it is possible to fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), from which you can grab a helicopter tour of the mountain.

  • If I would like to visit Chitwan National Park, what is the best airport for me to arrive at?

Bharatpur Airport (BHR) is the closest destination to Chitwan National Park and is just a 40 to 50min drive away. If you opt to fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) instead, you can go to the park via a tourist bus, which will take anywhere from 5 to 7h.

  • What is the best airport to fly into for those visiting the Bageshwari Temple?

When visiting the Bageshwari Temple, the closest destination is Nepalgunj Airport (KEP). It is possible to drive between the two locations, which takes around 35min, or you can opt to grab a local train, which will take you several hours.

  • Which airport in Nepal is suitable for tourists?

If you visit Nepal on tour, consider flying to Pokhara Airport (PKR), in Gandaki Province. The airport’s strategic location makes it an important gateway for many, from tourists visiting the Annapurna region and various sites like Phewa Lake to pilgrims travelling to Jomsom, Muktinath and other famous religious sites.

  • Is there an airport in Nepal serving as an airline hub?

Kathmandu Airport is the only airport in Nepal that serves as an airline hub. The airport is the primary hub for Nepal’s flag carrier, Nepal Airlines. It also serves as a hub for several other airlines, such as Guna Airlines, Shree Airlines, Yeti Airlines and Tara Air. You can easily connect to other destinations from Kathmandu Airport, including Nepalgunj, Bhadrapur and Rajbiraj.

  • Which airport in Nepal can I fly to with a pet?

Kathmandu Airport is the only airport allowing pets entry into Nepal. Two dogs or cats can enter the airport as air cargo, checked luggage or in the cabin. Since flights to Nepal from Australia have stopovers, avoid the India route, as the country does not permit non-residents to fly in with pets. Consider using Qantas and Virgin Airlines; they allow pets to fly in the cargo area.

  • Which airport in Nepal offers public transport services?

If you want to use public transport from an airport in Nepal, consider flying into Kathmandu Airport; it offers bus services to various destinations within Kathmandu and the surrounding areas. The buses are budget-friendly but have stops along the way, resulting in a longer travel duration. Taxis, with negotiable fares, and shuttle services are also available outside the airport terminal.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Australia to Nepal?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Australia to Nepal.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Australia to Nepal?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from Australia to Nepal is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Australia to Nepal?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly from Australia to Nepal with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Australia to Nepal?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from Australia to Nepal up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Nepal

  • Due to the extensive distance between the two locations, flights to Nepal from Australia will almost always have a stopover. Some of the most convenient cities for travellers to stop in include Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Guangzhou.
  • Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is known for being the country’s only international airport and can be found in the centre of Nepal, making it a practical destination for those that would like to explore cities such as Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Budhanilkantha. Keep in mind that you will first have to arrive at this airport before travelling to any other domestic locations.

From there, you will be within easy driving distance of cities like Jumla, Mugu, and Kalikot. Additionally, you will be close to the scenic rivers of Bheri and Bulbule Taal, as well as several skiing areas in the Himalayas.
  • If you plan on visiting Nepal for the purpose of exploring its green spaces and nature, consider flying into Bajura Airport (BJU), as this destination is close to hiking and bird watching areas in the Himalayan ranges, as well as additional tourist attractions, like the Jiulekmandu temple.
  • The main Australian airports offering flights to Nepal are Melbourne Airport (MEL), Sydney Airport (SYD) and Brisbane Airport (BNE). Consider flying from Sydney, which tends to have the most flights to Nepal.
  • If you are heading to the eastern side of Nepal, consider flying into Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). You can then take a domestic flight to Biratnagar Airport (BIR). It’s a major gateway to eastern Nepal and a focus city for Buddha Air and Nepal Airlines, offering daily flights to and from Kathmandu Airport.

Very concerned with guest comforts going out of their way to accommodate special dietary needs when the guests hadn’t pre-ordered.

I had ordered vegetarian food. What I was presented was extremely dissatisfying and not up to the mark. I pretty much did not eat entire 19 hours. For.an airline voted as best in business, it was extremely disappointing. Seats were not comfortable to sleep. Entertainment system didn’t have much choice. WiFi didn’t work for more than half the time. Cabin crew were also difficult to understand. A bit of diversity like Emirates crew would go a long way.

It was fine. Nothing special but nothing went wrong so all good.

I loved the full Taylor Swift selection but felt that the other selections were limited, didn’t span the popular music eras nor a wide enough range of music genres. BUT the seat and bed were GREAT (it was wide, long enough, had great storage, firm enough to uphold body postural comfort). Outstanding crew and really great food - gourmet innovative dim sum breakfast so different from the boring standard fare offered by many other business class products.

Overall the airline tried to give excellent service. The wheelchair service was bad at SFO. My baggage was also delayed but I thank them for taking the trouble to find it and deliver it to my home.

Excellent service. I pre-ordered gluten intolerant meal and they handle it with care. They served me my meal before other people's to avoid crossed contamination. Thank you 🙏

The flight arrived on time. 2×2 seating meant no one needed to sit in the middle. This was a connectibf flight from Singapore and required going to 3 counters in different levels to check a golf bag

toilets could be cleaned more frequently, everything else was pretty good.

Food was just okay, need to improve for other menu variations

Lounge a access was excellent as was the attentiveness and service from the crew as always. The food and drink supplied were of good quality. The entertainment system had a good selection and I liked the mapping system supplied. However the screen wild have been bigger and the operation a little smoother to navigate. The seats were barely comfortable, but adequate.

Gate and boarding processes were handled smoothly and efficiently. Both (connecting) flights departed and arrived on time. The cabin crew seemed anxious and a bit stressed/rushed. Food service was OK, but the hot food dishes were poor quality.

HAVING ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR PEOPLE TO BOARD ACCORDING TO GROUP IS ESSENTIAL N ENSURING N CUTTING OF QUEUES, EXCEPT FOR PRIORITY CLASS PASSENGERS ON A SEPARATE Q

We still get drinks and a snack. Love the gift bags too.

business class is old but still done very well by the team.

Excellent airline. The plane was clean and the staff were very attentive

Good experience although the boarding gate is at the terminal extension hence need to leave lounge to head over earlier.

Thai Royal First is very good. Easy check in , Private room in the first class lounge and escort from ticketing to the plane. Once on board crew was very polite, food was outstanding, and the ride was smooth as silk. Restrooms were especially clean. Great Experience

I'm not interested in improving the airline. Therefore, I won't explain this in more detail. Next time I'll try a different one.

The flight (boarding) was delayed by 40-50 minutes and there was very crowed. They need to improve on the timeliness & boarding process. (They asked passenger to board in groups, but the 2nd group was standing there waiting for 20 minutes!). However, services from the crew was very good, also the food was good as well. I also found the legroom was quite comfortable.

Need to improve on punctuality. My flight was delayed by 1 hour.

Nice staff, only one of the food services had a vegetarian option. Premium Economy was good - big seats and footrest. A little slow bringing welcome drink and often didn’t have the prosecco left on the tray - as though they are discouraging choosing that option. My only complaint is the wine/drinks served in a paper cup - I ordered a cognac on our previous flight and it came in the bottom of a paper cup, wine is poured into the cup like it’s a bucket!

Had a bad experience with crew member coming back Hong Kong to la the person next to me one of the passenger have taken video and picture of crew member the person that served meal young kid late 20' s 6 5'10 had attitude at his peak anything I asked for I don't know if it was bad day or racial I felt humiliated as people could see difference towards me I no problem with Cathy and my whole family never had one was very disappointed

Frequent Flyer number should.have been put in at time of booking.

Frequently flyer number should and could have been put on at the time of booking as I gave the number when booking.

I do not think there was much that could have been done to make it better. The delayed flight was due to bad weather. The turbulent patches were very unavoidable. Am simply thankful that there were no sudden and / or sharp drops during the flight. I do extend my compliments to captain Marcus I believe was his name and the rest of the crew. They all did an excellent job. My only question is whether I get a refund since the seats I had chosen and paid for were reassigned.

I spent 45 minutes with supervisor trying to get 2 bags checked for this international flight . He wouldn’t give it to me because West Jet was involved in this booking.

Everything and everyone were excellent except for the charge for using WiFi; there was no escape from this fee except to not use it.

The worst experience ever! Lots of flight delays and rerouting that ended up doubling the total time. . I had to recheck my luggage because I was rerouted to Tokyo and ended up on ANA flight. I missed connecting flight twice because of the delay at Cathy Pacific. Additional stop added, rerouted to a different country for connecting flight and ended up in long waits and delays.

Very bad. Flight got delayed and missed my transfer flight twice. Had to stay overnight in Hong Kong and the next flight booked was also delayed.i had the worst experience flying from Singapore to San Francisco. Lots of delays and rerouting.

The flight attendants were very helpful, efficient and courteous in helping everyone!

Poor seats. Not helpful crew. The food was awful.overall very very bad experience. Traveled with the family of 5

did not get a notification about seat selection ahead of time. We didn't end up sitting together.

I was denied boarding at the Brisbane airport and it seems like I won’t get any refunds from the airline

In my return flight they couldn’t identify my ticket or boarding pass, I had to go to 3 different counters until I was able to get my boarding pass. The food was on, it was the bear minimum. They didn’t even recognise that I was a Muslim and can’t eat meat, chicken or pork. In one of the trays I believe they served me pork. The staff were very pleasant, but they need to be aware of their surroundings more carefully, one of them stuck her lower belly right into my face! I was shocked and very uncomfortable.

Overall I had good experience with China Southern airline. Nothing to claim. I hoped they could improve the meal quality that is.

Wow very impressed by the quality and attentiveness of service of China Southern. Lived the blankets! Will definitely fly with them again. Despite language barriers, a few attendants know enough English to understand our rudimentary Mandarin and respond to basic questions. Although they don’t explain the beverage and meal service on the website or ticketing documents, they offered regular beverage cart and snacks during the beginning hours and end hours of the long, transoceanic flight. A full meal at the beginning and end of the flight as well, and a midflight small sandwich (dinner roll sized) but we weren’t hungry and didn’t try that one. The expectation is that every sleeps during the middle of the flight. We were on a “redeye” departure from LAX with a morning arrival in China, so I don’t know if this service pattern is the same for other flights. The domestic flight we took from Guangzhou to Harbin offered conventional refreshments and meals like a US flight service. Note that they didn’t offer diet sodas. If you like to stay hydrated, I recommend bringing plenty of your own. It is served in small cups like any other drink. You can ask for a bottle but they’re tiny - about 6 ounces.

China Southern was not the problem. I booked my flight through Kayak and also received a booking reference and alert details regarding departure time and gate numbers… however Kayak NEVER actually booked my flight! We were stranded at the airport without a flight for a long awaited holiday!

The connection between LA and Atlanta was too much stress

Terrible boarding experience,,food is very poor that I I . Never going book this airline again.

The crew were kind, patient and responsive. The service was excellent, even though we travelled the cheapest economy class. We arrived at our destination 40 min early, which for a 15+ hour flight is a great bonus. The boarding seemed a bit "loose", but got us boarded on time, and the plane was off exactly @ 0:30 hrs.

Food no choice just give it seams trying to finish what ever you have in hand

The crews were very professional and courteous. Pleasant flight and thank you!

They wouldn't let me on the plane. The 3rd party apparently didn't pay for the tickets properly?

Overall experience is good but if the food menu can change to authentic Malaysia food will be good. I.e. Nasi Lemak, Char Kueh Tiew and etc

Surprised that the safety briefing was only conducted in Malay language and no English despite there are foreigners on board. MH should take safety more seriously.

Flights were delayed, Food was good but only 1 meal instead of 2.

Food was good but only 1 meal and 1 pie, instead of 2 meals. Both legs were late.

We are row 11, when the crew came to us, only one meal choice was available.

OK seats comfortable, easy boarding/embarking, excellent connection to domestic Malaysia flight with baggage checked through without customs. Catering especially drinks borderline ok luckily less important aspect

Comfortable seats in economy, managed a few hours sleep in an o night flight but the food was terrible. Surprising as Malaysia airlines has been good in the past. Service was mediocre this time too.
